A Little About Me

Now that I’ve restarted the blog again, now’s a good time to introduce myself. One of the things that I’ve been wanting to do moving forward with the blog is to inject more of my personality. Previously, the blog has been “Hey, here’s some cool information! You should check it out!” My vision for future posts is “Hey, here’s some cool information… and here’s what I think about it.”

To start, my name is Dan Mansfield. I’m a cartographer by day (I have a background in geomatics, create maps and work with geographic information systems), and a Twitterer and blogger by night. I’m Canadian, and I live in southern Ontario with my wife Gavy (a polymer clay artist) and our two cats.

Here are some random things to know about me that will become apparent as I continue with the blog:

  • I love science and science-related information. While I’m not a scientist, nor do I have a scientific background, I still am amazed and fascinated by the wonders that the universe holds, and science is the best way  that humankind has found to discover them. I don’t have a particular focus of scientific interest, but if I had to pick one, it would be astronomy. Gavy and I enjoy stargazing (we have recently received a used telescope and plan to put it to good use) and fossil hunting.
  • I’m a fan of science fiction, both in media and written forms. I’ll write more on this as time goes on.
  • I read Wikipedia for fun, and when I was a kid (in the Dark Ages of the World Wide Web) I read the Golden Book Encyclopedias for fun. Yes, I’m a nerd.
  • Speaking of being a nerd, I tend to make frequent references to various forms of pop culture, mostly science fiction movies and TV shows, internet memes, and occasionally Canadian Heritage Minute commercials. I don’t know how Gavy puts up with me.
  • Oh, and I can play the ukulele somewhat. I’m not a professional by any stretch of the imagination.

That’s probably a good introduction for now. I’ll reveal more about myself as time goes on through my posts.
